The year is 2016, and you have some of Oppo’s favourite sport compacts to choose from.

DD, Track & Burn. Go!

Kinja'd!!!

Mazda MX-5, 155BHP 2.0 I4.

Kinja'd!!!

Toyota 86, 200BHP 2.0 F4.

Kinja'd!!!

Ford Fiesta ST, 180BHP 1.6 I4.

As always, you choose.

It’s a bit limiting to keep making these posts every week, so for now I’ll be dropping this series and posting other things instead. It was fun while it lasted though. Until next time, Oppo~

Being a hatchback, I tried to see if it was possible to put an actual human in the back seat with the front seat where I could actually sit. Couldn’t do it. Also, the seats were way too snug. The bolstering crushed my shoulders.

I went on a holiday with friends and rented a Fiesta. I managed to burn myself on a scalding hot pipe going through the passenger compartiment. I literally get a blister from a hot piece of metal in the interior of a supposedly modern car.

Everyone who speaks highly of the Fiesta is wrong. Seating position is shit, rear visibility is shit, wheels are too large, three cilinder sounds and feels rough so you need to keep the revs up which just wastes gas. Also, solid rear end. Like a fucking cart.

For these reasons, the ST deserves to be burnt in worse ways than it burned me. With fire.

I’d also like to track the Miata and daily the GT86. Because a roof is nice if you don’t have a garage.

I would rather have a GTI with PP over any of these and I am a VW hater.

Has power. (none of these cars do)

Has a front LSD (none of it’s competition does)

Has a 21st century transmission option (DCT).

I would both daily and track it.

After owning a WRX and then a Mustang GT I could never drive any car with 90s power again. Miata would probably need 200hp for me to like it, fiesta would have to have a LSD before we even talk, and the FRS would need at least 250. The only way I would consider a miata at it’s power level is if it had a high revving 1.6l engine like a blacktop 4age or the 1.8l 2ZZ. I do not want a car with a modern KA24DE.

What annoys me about the FRS is I could buy a 90s car that is superior to it, and I did... Skyline GTS-T. As good suspension, revs as good, significantly more power. As it sits I have 240whp on the car. Even a Silvia would be superior. It’s like if this were 1978 and I was considering buying a Mustang II when I could find a used Mach 1 from 1970. The car is like the AMERICAN S13-S14, not the proper JDM version.

Sorry for the post but I HATE modern Japanese cars. I believe they are in a state of severe malaise like the American industry in the late 70s.

I always hear of new cars “coming” to correct the malaise and they just don’t. Or they are just luxury cars at $70k+ because the Japanese think they are German now. Then Americans release shit like the Focus RS basically embarassing that entire country’s auto industry.

Do you like malaise and “sport compacts” that were done better 15-25 years ago? All 3 of these cars were surpassed back then by other cars in the same price range adjusted for inflation.

S2000>MX5 Club ($30k for a fucking LSD?)

Silvia>86

The only one that is arguably an improvement is the Fiesta ST, but it’s not Japanese so that explains why.

This is the Japanese malaise era.

They even put the typical malaise engine in the Miata. The low revving econobox engine brought over from cars like the Pinto. The Miata should have a sports car engine with revs, not some shit from a Protege.

If you are going to respond type an actual argument rather than some post a child would make. Might as well have said dicks out for harambe.

I’m fine with your long post, I see what you mean.

After the collapse of Japan’s bubble economy, they couldn’t really support as many ambitious or expensive designs due to limited funding.

As a result, the Japanese sports compact has died down a bit. That is not to say the quality of their cars is worse. Compare the Mazda 626 to the Mazda6 for instance, it’s a huge leap. Some brands have managed this better than others, but I wouldn’t call it malaise.

In the malaise era, most American cars were cobbled together and the management was atrocious. Engines were huge yet gutless, and everything was compromised. While the Japanese haven’t really returned to the same form as they were in the 90s, they are not anywhere close to this level. We live in an age where Corollas are being built to the same standard as a first gen Lexus LS, so it’s certainly not ‘malaise’.

While I agree with you for the most part, I don’t understand some of your complaints. Why is a ‘21st century transmission’ a good thing if it’s less involving than a manual? And power isn’t everything, the original inspiration for the Miata were low-powered classic British roadsters after all. Power =/= driving dynamics. Your complaint about the expensive Japanese cars didn’t make sense to me either. The Germans can do it, but all competition is healthy (and you cannot deny cars like the LFA are engineering masterpieces).

I’d have a S15 over a Toybaru any day. Modern Japanese cars are not as good as they were before, but they’re doing what they can. JDM exclusive models like the S660, Patrol and Crown are still going strong too.

Also the Fiesta ST and Focus RS are not very American, they’re both models originally designed by International divisions of Ford - making them more German than American.

Sorry for the long post myself, I just wanted to respond to all your points.
